It is situated next to the mineral-rich hot springs but is a primarily an agricultural region. Most agricultural activities involve grain production and stock farming. It is popularly known for the Caledon Spa and Casino and the rolling hills and yellow canola fields during spring time.

It lies about 160 km south-east of Cape Town on the Agulhas Plain and only 35 km from Cape Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa. The town has a museum dedicated to the shipwreck of the Arniston and the Merino Statue located at the entrance of the Bredasdorp/Napier Co-operative erected in honour of the merino sheep. The town is known for sheep farming and boast of other agricultural activities that includes wheat, canola, milk and indigenous fynbos cultivation.
