About Lhasa
Lhasa, high on the Tibetan Plateau, is a city of whitewashed monasteries and prayer wheels, crowned by the Potala Palace on its red hill.
Lhasa lies at about 3,650 metres in a broad valley by the Kyichu River, ringed by bare mountains, and is the cultural heart of Tibet. The Potala Palace, the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas from the 17th century, rises in white and red tiers above the city.
