1. First stop at this hilltop viewpoint on the western edge of Funchal, at around 355 metres altitude. Wide views over the city, the coastline and the surrounding hills. A good place to get your bearings on the island before heading inland.

2. The road climbs into the mountain interior until reaching this viewpoint above the Valley of the Nuns. From here you look down into the horseshoe-shaped valley, surrounded by steep volcanic ridges. One of the most recognised views on the island.

3. Descend into the village itself — a small, quiet community founded in the 16th century by nuns from Funchal's Santa Clara convent, who sought refuge here during pirate raids on the city. Time to walk around, have a coffee, and try a local chestnut speciality if you wish.

About Funchal

Funchal is the capital of Madeira, a Portuguese island in the Atlantic, set on steep green hills with flower-filled gardens and a seafront old town.

Funchal spreads up a steep hillside above a natural harbour on Madeira's south coast. The old town, the Zona Velha, has narrow lanes with painted doors and small restaurants, and the cathedral dates from around 1500. The Mercado dos Lavradores sells tropical fruit, fish and flowers in a hall decorated with blue tiles. A cable car climbs from the harbourfront to Monte, high above.
