Today the lighthouse has been converted into a hotel room with room service. In all kinds of weather, this is fascinating, and the most beautiful sunsets we can experience from here. From this part of Ålesund the fishing boats came in. Outside here are the rich fishing grounds. In the old days of the 1950s, the entire Brosundet was crowded with fishing boats that sought shelter from the weather or delivered their fish. • 5Excellent Guide. Good shore excursion for cruises

  I was on a Hurtigruten Cruise up the Norway Coast and opted to arrange this instead of going on the excursion that my cruise was offering. So glad I did! It is the perfect amount of time...not too long or too short. Comfortable mini-bus that can go up to the overlook area of the city when larger buses cannot. This means you do not have to hike all the way up the stairs. Several stops included some beautiful scenery and commentary with interesting history. We also had a short break at a wonderful cafe/shop with gifts made by local artisans. Water and soda was provided by our guide, Rolf, who was personable and helpful. He made sure I knew exactly where to meet the mini-bus by sending me a map via email. It was as easy walk from the Hurtigruten pier. Some other people from other cruises were on board the bus as well and they seemed to enjoy it very much. Highly recommended!

  The guide was not engaging and repeated the same information regarding the fire. The length of the stops were disproportionate. Too much time at the lighthouse and not enough time at the Sunmore Museum. The van was comfortable and the small tour size was great.

About Ålesund

Ålesund is a harbour town on Norway's west coast, rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after a fire, with fjords and bird islands within reach.

Ålesund lies on a cluster of islands where the Norwegian Sea meets the Sunnmøre Alps, in Møre og Romsdal. A fire in 1904 destroyed most of the town, and it was rebuilt within a few years in Art Nouveau style, with turrets, spires and ornament in stone along the harbour canal. The Art Nouveau Centre tells the story, and the 418 steps up Aksla hill lead to a viewpoint over islands and peaks.
