First Stop: Acaya Village & Renaissance Castle After a scenic 13 km ride through the peaceful countryside starting from Lecce, you’ll reach your first stop: the charming fortified village of Acaya. Here, you’ll explore the impressive Castello di Acaya, one of the finest examples of Renaissance military architecture in southern Italy. Perfectly preserved, this unique fortress was designed as part of an ideal defensive city, offering a rare glimpse into 16th-century urban planning. Walk through its massive stone walls, bastions, and inner courtyards as you uncover the history of this strategic stronghold. From noble ambitions to military innovation, Acaya tells the story of a time when architecture and defense were deeply intertwined. This first stop sets the tone for the journey ahead—blending history, culture, and discovery in one of Salento’s most fascinating hidden gems.
Hands-On Reed Weaving Workshop at Acquarica Castle Step off your bike and step back in time at the historic Castello di Acquarica, where tradition is still alive in the hands of local artisans. During this exclusive 45-minute stop, you’ll take part in a **hands-on workshop** dedicated to the ancient craft of reed weaving—an art that has been passed down through generations in Salento and is still used today to create beautiful, functional baskets. Guided by a local expert, you’ll learn how to skillfully weave natural giunco fibers and create your own small handmade piece—such as a coaster or mini pot—to take home as a meaningful souvenir of your journey. This immersive experience is more than just a workshop—it’s a chance to connect with authentic local culture, slow down, and appreciate the craftsmanship behind one of the region’s oldest traditions. A perfect blend of creativity, heritage, and relaxation, set within the charming atmosphere of a historic castle.
Underground Olive Oil Experience at Vernole’s ancient Mill Pause your ride and descend into the fascinating world beneath the surface at the Frantoio Ipogeo di Vernole, a hidden gem that tells the story of Salento’s deep connection to olive oil. Led by local expert Giovanna, this guided visit takes you inside an ancient underground mill carved into the rock, where olive oil production once thrived far from the heat above. As you explore the atmospheric chambers, you’ll discover how this “liquid gold” was traditionally produced and why it became one of the region’s most valuable exports. Learn the surprising history of lamp oil—a lower-grade olive oil once used to fuel lamps and illuminate cities across Europe and beyond—making Salento a key player in a global trade network. This unique stop offers more than history; it’s a journey into resilience, and heritage of the local community, brought to life through engaging storytelling in an unforgettable underground setting.
Authentic Olive Oil Tasting with Lina at Masseria 5 Santi Continue your ride into the heart of the countryside for a truly intimate and authentic experience at Masseria 5 Santi. Here, you’ll be warmly welcomed into the home of Signora Lina, the owner of the masseria, who will host you for a personal olive oil tasting experience unlike any other. This is not a commercial stop—it’s a genuine visit where you’ll feel like a guest, not a tourist. Seated in her home, Lina will guide you through the entire journey of olive oil production—from the ancient olive trees that surround the property to the harvesting and pressing process, all the way to the flavors and aromas of her exceptional extra virgin olive oil. Learn how to taste olive oil like a local, discovering the notes, textures, and characteristics that make high-quality EVOO so special. This stop is a highlight for food lovers—an opportunity to connect with local life, tradition, and passion in the most genuine way possible.

About Lecce
Lecce is a Baroque city in Italy's heel, built in honey-coloured limestone and carved with flowers, animals and saints on every façade.
Lecce's soft local limestone could be carved like wood, and the architects of the seventeenth century used it to cover churches and palaces in garlands, cherubs, animals and plants, a style called Leccese Baroque. The Basilica of Santa Croce has the richest façade, and the Piazza del Duomo is a closed square with a campanile. A Roman amphitheatre lies half uncovered in Piazza Sant'Oronzo, and the city is sometimes called the Florence of the South.
Top-ranked sights in Lecce: Lecce Basilica of Santa Croce (Basilica Di Santa Croce), Lecce Roman Amphitheatre (Anfiteatro Romano di Lecce), Porta Napoli.
