This rugged canyon, through which the Lousios River flows, is famed for its wild landscapes, ancient monasteries perched precariously on its cliffs, and the rich biodiversity that thrives within its depths. About Kalamata

Kalamata is the main city of Messenia in the southern Peloponnese, a seaside town below Mount Taygetus, known for its olives and olive oil.

Kalamata lies at the head of the Messenian Gulf, with the Taygetus range rising behind it. The old town below its 13th-century Frankish castle has narrow lanes, Byzantine churches and a railway park of old locomotives. It was among the first Greek towns to join the uprising of 1821, and its seafront is lined with palms and cafés.
