This tour reveals Florence beyond its Renaissance façade, uncovering its Roman origins and long historical evolution. From the ancient Roman city of Florentia to traces of the Forum, theatre, urban infrastructure, city walls, and baths, Florence preserves layers of history still visible in its urban fabric. The journey continues through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, highlighting powerful families such as the Medici and masters of art including Brunelleschi, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci. In the Medieval Quarter, you will admire stone towers, including the Torre della Pagliazza, a former women’s prison built on the ruins of a Roman Bath building.
I will tell you about Dante and the church where the great poet met Beatrice, the protagonist of the Divine Comedy.
Where Dante Alighieri once lived, there is now a museum dedicated to him. I will talk to you about Dante’s role as the father of the Italian language and his exile from Florence.
You will visit the courtyard of Palazzo Vecchio on the ground floor, with Renaissance frescoes painted for the Medici family, who lived inside the palace.
You will admire the majestic Renaissance statues that still decorate the square and the Loggia dei Lanzi, as well as the elegant façade of Palazzo Vecchio.
You will learn the history of the palace that today houses Italy’s most famous painting gallery, one of the most important in the world : the Uffizi Gallery.
