Highlights

The first time that Easy Company part of the 101st. Airborne division reached the hills of Obersalzberg most of the buildings in that area where destroyed. If you visit this area today you will see that a lot has changed, the forest has taken over and a big parking place leads people straight up the mountain. This tour is here to provide you with far reaching insight of the historical locations hidden in the forest, see the ruins of Hitler's house and other WWII sights that will bring history to life. Then hike up from there to the Eagle's Nest and you will following the steps of the first American soldiers that got there by foot in May 1945. Even though the Eagle's Nest is one of the most visited places in Germany our tour will take us thru a more richer and less traveled path. The tour is a mix world history, exercise and incredible landscapes. I take pride in offering the best possible experience to deliver professional and safe guidance in the mountains with a relaxed atmosphere.

It definitely is the way to see The Eagle’s Nest. Claudio was a fabulous guide and gave us lots of tidbits of history that most likely none of us knew. We also saw where Hitler’s home was and the Tea House part way up the hill, which most people don’t get to see. So much information, good exercise and a comprehensive visit for the time we had. You do have to be in shape to a degree because there is an uphill climb up.

  • 3Claudio was excellent....

Claudio was excellent. Very nice and informative. However, we did not realize just how steep the four mile hike to Eagles Nest would be! Claudio did not rush us, but just be aware that if you are not used to exercise, this will be a serious challenge. In addition, the bus to return from the top (Eagles Nest) to the parking area is not included and is very expensive! Over 40 euros per person. On a positive note, Claudio met us at the bus station in Salzburg for no additional cost. This was helpful because we did not have to figure out which buses we needed to take.

  • 5Book this hike. You won't regret it!

Had a fantastic hike with my wife up to the Eagle's Nest with Claudio. He was an excellent and extremely knowledgable guide. We were able to see things related to WWII history that you won't see on the bus trip to the top. The hike was good exercise, a consistent incline but definitely doable. Took us about 2 1/2 hours to get to the entrance to the elevator to the Nest. The views were spectacular and we were fortunate to have Claudio all to ourselves this particular day. This was the last thing we did on our week long trip to Switzerland and Austria and it was definitely a highlight. Book this tour if you want a more active way to get to the Eagle's Nest. You won't regret it.

  • 5This was an absolutely...

This was an absolutely amazing experience that i am so glad we took! Claudio was beyond amazing! Kind, enthusiastic, and full of so much knowledge. We learned so much on this hike. The hike itself was hard, I’ll be honest. The last 2/3rds really took it out of us, but once we were to the top, we were so glad we did it!

  • 5Over the top experience!!

Claudio is an excellent tour guide. His passion for history and communicating that to others in this platform is a perfect fit. We had to make some adjustments to the hike and Claudio was very flexible and accommodating! He even gave us a ride back to Salzburg and made sure we were on the right bus to our hotel!! It’s a unique way to see an amazing place!!

  • 5Incredible experience hiking through history

My husband and I had an excellent experience on our guided hike to Eagle's Nest. Claudio is incredibly knowledgable and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with and learning from him. This hike was truly a once-in-a-lifetime way to experience the breathtaking beauty of the area as well as learn more about the history and impact of fascism during WWII. The hike itself is not too challenging, though it is uphill the whole way. There's time at the top to explore on your own as well before heading back down as a group, and we were able to time our tour to allow for some time at the Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg, which is also worth a visit. Claudio was kind enough to help us plan our way from Salzburg city centre and also picked us up at the train station in Berchtesgaden. The group size was nice and small (5 people total + Claudio) and it was nice to get to know the other folks in the group too. Would definitely recommend booking with Monkey Business Tours if you're in the area and wish to gain more insight on the area and the history as you explore!

About Berchtesgaden

Berchtesgaden is an Alpine town in Bavaria's far south-east, set among steep peaks beside the deep green Königssee, with a long salt-mining history.

Berchtesgaden lies in a high valley of the Bavarian Alps, ringed by the peaks of the Berchtesgaden National Park, Germany's only alpine national park. Its wealth came from salt, mined here since the Middle Ages, and visitors can still ride a miners' train into the salt mine and cross an underground lake on a raft. The old town centres on a former monastery, later a royal palace of the Bavarian Wittelsbach family.

Top-ranked sights in Berchtesgaden: Nationalpark Berchtesgaden, Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg, Berchtesgaden Salt Mine (Salzbergwerk Berchtesgaden).
