3. The Qaitbay Citadel was built in 1477 by the Mamluk Sultan al-Ashraf Qaitbay to protect the Egyptian Mediterranean coast. Today, the fortress is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, offering spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and the historic port of Alexandria.
