Kotor lies at the end of a deep, winding bay surrounded by steep mountains, a UNESCO-listed walled town of stone lanes, squares and the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, with fortress walls climbing the hill behind. Herceg Novi, at the mouth of the bay, is a town of stairways and a sea fortress, and Igalo, beside it, is an old spa resort on the shore.
Budva has a walled old town on a small peninsula and a coast of sandy beaches, with the islet of Sveti Stefan nearby. Podgorica, the capital, lies on the plain where the Morača and Ribnica rivers meet, with an Ottoman quarter and the Millennium Bridge. Nikšić, the second city, lies in the mountains, and Žabljak, in Durmitor National Park, is a base for hiking, rafting the Tara Canyon and skiing, beside the Black Lake.
Smoked Njeguši ham and cheese, kačamak, a cornmeal dish with potato and cheese, and grilled fish or black risotto on the coast show the mix of mountain and sea. Vranac is the local red wine, and rakija is common. Beaches are warm from June to September, and the mountains hold snow for skiing from December to March.
