Rivers define Bangladesh, where the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna spread into one of the largest deltas in the world. Dhaka, the capital, is a dense city of cycle rickshaws, with the river port of Sadarghat in the old quarter, the pink Ahsan Manzil palace and the Mughal-era Lalbagh Fort. Chittagong, the main port, sits between the sea and forested hills in the south-east.
In the north-east, Sylhet is surrounded by tea gardens that roll across low hills, with Jaflong and the Ratargul swamp forest nearby. In the north-west, Rajshahi is a silk and mango town on the Padma, in a region that holds the ruined Buddhist monastery of Paharpur. The Sundarbans, a vast tidal mangrove forest in the south-west shared with India, shelters Bengal tigers, and Cox's Bazar has a long beach on the Bay of Bengal.
Fish and rice make the base of the table, with hilsa cooked in mustard, rich bhuna curries and the layered biryani of Dhaka. Sweets such as roshogolla and mishti doi, a sweetened yoghurt, are served at every celebration, and tea comes with milk. Winter, from November to February, is dry and cool; the monsoon greens the country and floods low land.
