During the second half of the first century, Christians were heavily persecuted under Roman rule. According to tradition after the crucifixion of Jesus, St John brought Mother Mary to Ephesus with him to hide and escape persecution.

2. he House of the Virgin Mary is located 6 km (3.7 mi) from Ephesus and surrounded by pine and olive trees. It is made of stone and looks very small and humble. Outside the house is a “wishing wall” which pilgrims have used by tying their intentions on paper or fabric. A water source is also located nearby, believed to have miraculous healing powers. The shrine was visited by several popes.

About Bodrum

Bodrum, on Turkey's Aegean coast, is a whitewashed harbour town beneath a Crusader castle, with ancient ruins and coves, facing the Greek island of Kos.

Bodrum curves around two bays beneath the Castle of St Peter, a fortress built by the Knights of St John in the fifteenth century and now home to a museum of underwater archaeology. The town stands on the site of ancient Halicarnassus, birthplace of the historian Herodotus, and the remains of the Mausoleum, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, lie in a quiet garden.
