First, the path leads us to the elegant English building, whose magnificent architecture speaks of great times. Here you get a first impression of the moving history of this imposing facility. A few steps later, we stand before the romantic Elizabeth Gate – a legendary stone testament to love that will immediately captivate you. 2. • Option 1 (Courtyard & Giant Barrel): We enter the heart of the complex. In the magnificent castle courtyard, the legendary Great Barrel awaits you – an absolute highlight full of wonder! Of course, you'll find the story about it here too. Also get to know the barrel keeper - Perkeo. (Note: An additional admission fee applies for the inner courtyard). Your tour ends on the large terrace. • Option 2 (Palatine Garden): We stroll together through the extensive Hortus Palatinus. On the terraces of the garden complex, you enjoy the world-famous postcard view over the Neckar and the old town. Our tip: The admission to the castle courtyard is already included with the purchase of a mountain cable car ticket. Castle ticket: €11 (from the city to the castle and back, admission to the Schlossinnenhof) Panorama ticket: €17 (like castle ticket, plus historical mountain railway to Königstuhl and back) Tour of the castle interiors: €6 (per hour)

About Heidelberg

Heidelberg is a university town on the Neckar in south-west Germany, with a ruined red-sandstone castle, an old stone bridge and a long main street.

Heidelberg sits where the Neckar leaves its wooded valley and enters the Rhine plain in Baden-Württemberg. The castle above the old town, built in red sandstone and left half ruined by French armies in the 1690s and a lightning strike in 1764, holds the Great Tun, a barrel that can hold over 200,000 litres of wine. The Old Bridge, with its twin-towered gate, crosses the river, and the Hauptstrasse runs for over a kilometre through the pedestrian old town.
