Your tour begins in the shadow of Bernini's majestic colonnade. Your guide will set the historical scene, explaining the significance of the ancient obelisk, the architecture of the square, and the history of the site where St. Peter was martyred under Nero's Circus.
Upon entering the Basilica, proceed directly to this world-famous sculpture. Your guide will share the fascinating story of a 24-year-old Michelangelo, why this is the only work he ever signed, and the dramatic story of its damage and restoration in the 1970s.
"The Baldacchino & Papal Altar" Stand beneath Bernini's towering bronze canopy, which marks the exact spot of St. Peter's tomb below. Learn the controversial story of how bronze was stripped from the Pantheon to create this masterpiece and understand its significance in Catholic tradition.
"The Statue of St. Peter" Visit the beloved bronze statue of St. Peter, seated with the keys to the kingdom. Your guide will explain the ancient pilgrim tradition of touching the statue's foot for blessing—a practice that has worn the bronze smooth over centuries of devotion.
Descend to the level of the original 4th-century church to explore the papal tombs. Here you will visit the final resting places of many pontiffs, including the simple and moving tomb of St. John Paul II, offering a quiet moment of reflection.
"The Dome (Cupola) Climb" Ascend to the rooftop of the world's largest church for the ultimate Roman panorama. After a short elevator ride, climb the remaining 320 steps to the summit. From the top, enjoy a breathtaking 360-degree view of Rome, the Vatican Gardens, and a unique bird's-eye view of the Basilica's interior from the balcony below.

About Rome
Rome layers nearly three thousand years of history into one walkable city, from the Colosseum and Forum to Baroque piazzas and Vatican art.
Ancient Rome is still in plain sight. The Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine Hill sit together at the city's heart, the Pantheon still stands with its open oculus, and fragments of temples and aqueducts turn up between apartment blocks. Across the Tiber, Vatican City holds St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel ceiling.
Top-ranked sights in Rome: Colosseum, Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel.
