"The Baldacchino & Papal Altar" Stand beneath Bernini's towering bronze canopy, which marks the exact spot of St. Peter's tomb below. Learn the controversial story of how bronze was stripped from the Pantheon to create this masterpiece and understand its significance in Catholic tradition.
"The Statue of St. Peter" Visit the beloved bronze statue of St. Peter, seated with the keys to the kingdom. Your guide will explain the ancient pilgrim tradition of touching the statue's foot for blessing—a practice that has worn the bronze smooth over centuries of devotion.
Descend to the level of the original 4th-century church to explore the papal tombs. Here you will visit the final resting places of many pontiffs, including the simple and moving tomb of St. John Paul II, offering a quiet moment of reflection.
"The Dome (Cupola) Climb" Ascend to the rooftop of the world's largest church for the ultimate Roman panorama. After a short elevator ride, climb the remaining 320 steps to the summit.
