Hierapolis (ancient Greek "Holy City", occasionally Hieropolis) was an ancient Greek city in the Phrygia region in Asia Minor. Only about 5 kilometers outside of Denizli province and about 11 kilometers south of Hierapolis, a visit to the ancient city is an ideal alternative to the overcrowded Pamukkale. The river Lykus, called Çürüksu ırmak by the locals, was a tributary of the meander and formed the basis of life for the historically ancient city of Laodikeia, whose spelling also appears with Laodicea.
