2. Svetitskhoveli sits at the heart of Old Mtskheta and is even more historically significant than Jvari. This is the ‘First Georgian Church’, erected on a spot chosen by Saint Nino herself. It houses dozens of precious relics, including (what is believed to be) Christ’s Mantle, a 4th-century baptismal font, and a piece of cedar wood salvaged from the original structure.

6. The origins of the fortress date back to the 7th century, when it was built by the Arab conquerors of Georgia. In the 16th century, the fortress was renovated by the Georgian king Rostom, and it was later taken over by the Ottoman Empire in the 18th century.

The old town gathers along the Mtkvari River, its narrow streets lined with carved wooden balconies, churches and wine bars. Abanotubani, the bath district, is crowned by brick domes over sulphur springs, and the walls of Narikala Fortress overlook it all, reached by cable car or a steep walk. The Mother of Georgia statue stands on the ridge holding a sword and a bowl of wine.
