  6. After the great fire of 1681 the Kristiansteen fortress was built on the hilltop to keep an eye on the city. It also had a strategic military position, and helped save the city from conquest by Sweden in 1718. During the Second World War it was taken over by the Nazis, who executed 23 Norwegian patriots inside it. The building is now a museum, which includes a dungeon that's open to view. If you see a flag waving over the fortress, it means that the fortress is open to the public.

About Trondheim

Trondheim is a historic city on a fjord in central Norway, with a great medieval cathedral, a wooden-house quarter on the river and many students.

Trondheim stands where the Nidelva river bends into the Trondheimsfjord, and was founded by the Viking king Olav Tryggvason in 997. Nidaros Cathedral, built over the grave of St Olav, is the largest medieval building in Scandinavia, with a richly carved west front, and pilgrims have walked to it for centuries. Across the Old Town Bridge, Bakklandet has timber houses painted in bright colours and cafés, and old wooden warehouses stand on stilts along the river.
