A man named Martínez, the first owner of the La Barra hotel, La Posta del Cangrejo, would have convinced the then Uruguayan president Eduardo Víctor Haedo to build a bridge that would connect that town with Punta del Este.

Montevideo spreads along the north shore of the Río de la Plata, where the river is as wide as a sea. The Ciudad Vieja, the old town on a small peninsula, is where the city began in the 1720s, a district of Art Deco and colonial buildings. Plaza Independencia opens onto it, with the Palacio Salvo tower and the statue and mausoleum of José Artigas, the national hero, and the Teatro Solís, opened in 1856, stands nearby.
