Experience the historic city center of Wittenberg with its Castle Church and the famous door where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses. Stroll around the streets and follow the footsteps of Martin Luther and his colleagues. You would never guess that his little quiet town was the center of one of the most well-known religious revolutions in the world. The events that unfolded here in the 16th Century changed the foundations of Christendom. It was here where Martin Luther lived and preached, and on October 31, 1517, he nailed his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church. The Protestant Reformation had begun. Sometimes called the “Rome of the Protestants”, many Luther memorial sites were added to the UNESCO world heritage list in 1996.

View Luther's Residence, a large cloister that the Reformer Martin Luther used as a home. Visit Wittenberg's Market Square, dominated by the Town Hall and the towers of the City Church. Have a look at the Luther Memorial. Behind the market is an old church called Stadtkirche, where Luther preached and got married to Katharina von Bora. Pass Castle Church, the famous church where Martin Luther nailed his 95 Theses to the door. Luther gave some of his sermons in this church and now is buried just under the pulpit. Another important landmark is Luther's Oak., wherein 1520, Luther's supporters burned a stack of writings of Church doctrine. In 1830, an oak tree was planted on the spot where all this allegedly took place. We finish our tour with Wittenberg University, where you can still see parts of the structure dating back to the XVI century. Luther himself worked within these walls and quotations of his are displayed on the walls in the entrance hall.

About Leipzig
Leipzig is a Saxon city of music, trade fairs and coffee houses, where Bach worked and where the peaceful protests of 1989 began.
Leipzig has been a trading city since the Middle Ages, and its fairs gave it arcades, courtyards and merchants' houses. Johann Sebastian Bach was cantor at the Thomaskirche from 1723 until his death, and the Thomanerchor, the boys' choir, has sung there since 1212. The Nikolaikirche was the starting point of the Monday demonstrations of 1989, and the 91-metre Monument to the Battle of the Nations marks the great battle of 1813.
