About Florianópolis
Florianópolis, capital of Santa Catarina, sits mostly on a long island of beaches, lagoons, dunes and old Azorean fishing villages.
Most of the city spreads over Santa Catarina Island, joined to the mainland by bridges, among them the Hercílio Luz suspension bridge, the city's emblem. The old centre has a 19th-century public market, a cathedral on the main square and low colonial houses. Portuguese settlers from the Azores arrived in the 18th century, and their descendants shaped the fishing villages and white churches around the island.
