Huis Zypendaal is a beautiful historic country house in Arnhem, surrounded by a peaceful estate and park. Built between 1762 and 1764 for the influential Brantsen family, it later became the home of Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra, Audrey Hepburn’s grandfather and former mayor of Arnhem. Audrey and her family stayed here when they first moved to Arnhem.
Sonsbeek Park is one of Arnhem’s most beautiful and beloved green spaces. Once a private country estate, it became a public park in 1899. With its woods, lawns, ponds, waterfalls and historic buildings, it feels like a peaceful oasis close to the city centre. Audrey Hepburn spent part of her childhood in Arnhem, with the park forming part of the landscape of her youth.
Musis Sacrum is one of Arnhem’s oldest cultural venues and has played an important role in the city’s musical history. During World War II, the building was used by the German occupying forces. It also has a connection to young Audrey Hepburn: in 1941, at just 12 years old, she performed here as a ballet dancer. Today, Musis remains an important concert venue in Arnhem
The John Frost Bridge is one of Arnhem’s most iconic landmarks and a powerful reminder of the Battle of Arnhem. In September 1944, British paratroopers under Lieutenant Colonel John Frost fought to hold the bridge during Operation Market Garden. The battle had a devastating impact on Arnhem and its residents, including Audrey Hepburn, whose family had moved to nearby Velp. Today, the bridge is a symbol of the city’s wartime history.
Airborne at the Bridge tells the story of the Battle of Arnhem through the experiences of the British soldiers who fought at the nearby bridge. Located close to the John Frost Bridge, the museum brings the events of September 1944 to life through personal stories, photographs and historical objects. It is a powerful place to learn more about the battle that had such a profound impact on Arnhem.
The Audrey Hepburnplein is the perfect place to end your walk through Audrey’s Arnhem. Hopefully, you’ve learned something new about Audrey, her childhood in Arnhem and the events of World War II that had such a profound influence on her life. From a young ballet dancer in Arnhem to an internationally celebrated actress and UNICEF ambassador, Audrey Hepburn’s life was extraordinary. We hope you enjoyed discovering her story along the way!

About Arnhem
Arnhem is a city on the Nederrijn in the eastern Netherlands, with a Second World War bridge, an open-air museum, a zoo and the Veluwe woods behind it.
Arnhem lies on the Lower Rhine at the edge of the Veluwe, a large area of woods and heath, and its fashion shops and creative studios give it a youthful feel. The Eusebius Church, rebuilt after the damage of 1944, rises over the centre with a lift to the top of its tower, and the Sabelspoort is a surviving medieval gate. In September 1944 the city was the objective of the airborne Operation Market Garden, and the bridge fought over, now named for Colonel John Frost, still crosses the river.
