Discover Madaba Beyond the Postcard. Madaba is one of the Middle East's most remarkable living museums and this intimate 2-hour walking tour with a knowledgeable local guide brings its extraordinary story to life. Walk through 2,000 years of history as you visit St. George's Church — home to the world-famous 6th century Byzantine Mosaic Map of the Holy Land — the Madaba Archaeological Park, the Archaeological Museum and the magnificent Shrine of St. John the Baptist. Climb the bell tower for rare panoramic views over the ancient rooftops of Madaba that most visitors never get to see. Along the way your local guide will take you off the beaten path — through bustling bazaars, past hidden gems and into authentic encounters with local life and traditions that no guidebook can offer. The tour is completely flexible and designed entirely around you — stop whenever you like, ask questions freely and let curiosity lead the way. This is Madaba the way locals truly experience it every day.
Your first stop is the world-famous St. George’s Church, home to the Madaba Mosaic Map, the oldest surviving map of the Holy Land, dating back to the 6th century. Your guide will explain the map's significance in Christian history and its detailed depictions of Jerusalem and other biblical sites.
Continue to the Madaba Archaeological Park, where you’ll encounter ancient mosaics from different periods, including the remains of churches, houses, and streets from the Byzantine era. Key highlights include mosaics from the Church of the Virgin Mary and the Hippolytus Hall.
Visit the Madaba Museum to dive deeper into the city’s history. Here, you’ll see a collection of artifacts from the Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic periods, providing a broader understanding of the cultural evolution of Madaba.
End your tour with a visit to the Shrine of St. John the Baptist, an impressive 19th-century Catholic church. Ascend the bell tower for panoramic views of the city and explore the underground crypt believed to house relics related to St. John the Baptist.

Madaba is a small town south-west of Amman, called the City of Mosaics, famous for a sixth-century floor map of the Holy Land in a Greek Orthodox church.
Madaba stands on a low plateau on the King's Highway, the old route through the hills of Jordan, and is a town where Byzantine mosaics lie under churches and houses. St George's Church holds the best known of them, a sixth-century map of the Holy Land made from small coloured stones, which shows Jerusalem, rivers, towns and fish swimming in the Jordan. The Archaeological Park, with the Church of the Virgin and the Hippolytus Hall, displays more floors.
