Discover the world of gemstones and highest quality emeralds in the world. Colombian emeralds are famous for their exotic beauty and considered an important part of our cultural and geological heritage. This Emerald Gemstone tour invites you to discover the processes of mining, production and stone carving, while touring the main emerald trade center located in La Candelaria, the oldest neighborhood of Bogotá. We will visit several places where you'll find unique rough stones, sculptures and elegant jewelry designs, showcasing how Colombian emeralds are unique for their color, brightness, purity and size.
Walk toward Plazoleta del Rosario, where the air vibrates with the murmur of "comisionistas" (brokers). From Monday to Friday, the market comes alive organically: men with magnifying glasses examine stones under natural light, negotiating with choreographed discretion. Move through the Eje Ambiental, surrounded by the brick architecture of Rogelio Salmona, until you enter the International Emerald Museum.
Unlike conventional galleries, here you access a real workshop. The hum of the cutting disc and the mineral scent of dust greet you. Observe the cutting and polishing process up close, understanding why formations like the "oil drop" or the "trapiche" emerald are natural whims found only in Colombian soil.
The journey ends at a specialized gallery in La Candelaria, where you learn to decipher the purity, tone, and value of an authentic stone while enjoying a local coffee. This experience demystifies luxury to reveal the craft. By understanding the human effort behind every carved facet, you discover why the emerald is the symbol of Colombia's resilience and natural beauty. Move from being a spectator to a connoisseur who values ethical trade and the manual art that sustains a nation's prestige.

Bogotá, Colombia's capital, sits high in the Andes at around 2,600 metres, with a colonial old quarter, a famed gold museum and a hilltop church.
La Candelaria, the old quarter, lies at the foot of the eastern hills, with streets of colonial houses, galleries and murals around Plaza de Bolívar and its cathedral. The Gold Museum holds thousands of pre-Hispanic gold objects, and the Botero Museum shows the plump figures of Fernando Botero, who gave the city his collection. Above town, a funicular and cable car rise to Monserrate, a white church at over 3,100 metres.
Top-ranked sights in Bogotá: Plaza de Bolivar, Botero Museum (Museo Botero), Gold Museum (Museo del Oro).
