The trails where originally opened by gauchos and local people travelling between the two countries when borders where not clear among Chile and Argentina. About Puerto Varas
Puerto Varas is a lakeside town in southern Chile, set on Lake Llanquihue beneath the Osorno and Calbuco volcanoes with a German-settler stamp.
Puerto Varas sits on the shore of Lake Llanquihue, one of Chile's largest lakes, with the snow-capped cone of Osorno volcano standing across the water and the jagged Calbuco close by. German families settled the region from the 1850s, and the wooden houses with steep shingled roofs and the gardens full of roses along the lakefront still show their influence.
