The old wooden houses and narrow streets furthest from the river are mostly unimproved, closer to the river there are craft and souvenir shops, teahouses and music, and lots of local food and snacks. About Chongqing

Chongqing is a vast hilly city where the Yangtze meets the Jialing in south-west China, known for fiery hot pot, steep streets and a skyline lit at night.

Chongqing spreads across steep hills at the meeting of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, so its roads climb and drop, cable cars cross the water, and a monorail line passes through a residential tower. It is one of China's four municipalities under direct central control, and it served as the Nationalist government's capital during the Second World War. Hongyadong, a cliffside complex built in the style of the region's stilted houses, is lit up at night.
