2. Called "a historical jewel in Medan", the 35-room, 2-storey Tjong A Fie Mansion was built in 1895 on an area of 8000 sq. meter. It is a registered historical landmark as well as a cultural heritage building and museum. The Mansion has Chinese, Malay and Art Deco influences in its architecture style. The structure was built observing feng-shui principles. The rooms are on four sides of the structures and surround a big open-air courtyard in the middle, signifying the "Well of Heaven".

Each building at the Maitreya Monastery actually has a guesthouse. 5. Built in 1906 – 1909, the historical Great Mosque is one of the most important landmarks and pilgrimage sites in Medan. Built by the Sultan/King of Sultanate Deli, it has octagonal symmetrical layout adorned with detailed ornaments and combined elements from Morocco, Europe and Middle East. .

About Medan

Medan is the largest city on Sumatra, a trading hub with a sultan's palace, a grand mosque, Chinese mansions and the road to Lake Toba and Bukit Lawang.

Medan is the capital of North Sumatra and the biggest city on the island, a trading centre that grew rich in the late 19th century on tobacco and rubber plantations. The legacy is a mix of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Batak communities and of colonial architecture. The Maimun Palace, built for the Sultan of Deli at the end of the 19th century, has yellow Malay-style walls with Mughal and European touches, and the Great Mosque of Medan, with its black dome, stands nearby.
