  1. Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, is a popular tourist attraction in Pamplemousses, near Port Louis, Mauritius, and the oldest botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere. Famous for its long pond of giant water lilies (Victoria amazonica), the garden was first constructed by Pierre Poivre (1719 – 1786) in 1770, and it covers an area of around 37 hectares. In addition to its giant waterlilies, the garden also features spices, ebonies, sugar canes, and 85 varieties of palms from Central America, Asia, Africa and the islands around the Indian Ocean. Many trees have been planted by world leaders and royalty, including Princess Margaret, Countess of Snowdon, Indira Gandhi, François Mitterrand and Robert Mugabe.

  2. Caudan, as it is now commonly known, was the first major shopping development of its kind on the island of Mauritius. It remains to this day an iconic shopping destination for locals and tourists alike. In the mall, visitors will find the latest fashion shops and trends, a popular arts and craft market, known as the Craft Market, Specialty shops selling unique local goods such as replica ships, Indian garments, locally fabricated jewelry or art paintings from local artists. The shopping center also boasts cinemas, a marina, a bookstore, restaurants and cafes, a museum, hosting two of the rarest stamps in the world, a casino and tax free shopping options for tourists. Although being the first shopping mall on the island, Caudan has been able to keep up with the trends and maintains its allure as a modern waterfront mall.

  • 5A wonderful, unrushed day exploring the best of the north

My family and I really enjoyed our day trip. Our guide was so friendly and knowledgeable. Nothing feels rushed and we had a good look in the market at Port Louis, followed by magnificent views from Citadel. We visited Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, a "must-see", if in the area. Our guide took us to a local place for lunch which was delicious. Our final stop was the Grand Baie beach. Definitely great value for money and a very satisfying day!

  • 5Great road trip, discovery, and information tour for this amazing country!

I chose this tour because of the private, customizable nature, and the ability to see so much of Mauritius. I was not disappointed and I had one of the best days! My driver, Avi, was completely open to my requests and made it an incredibly fun day. For me, the views of the topography, the incredible beach drive and breaks were ideal. I enjoyed the botanical gardens, I especially recommend the pink 🪷 lotus. THANK YOU, Avi for all the information about Mauritius!! Highly recommend for solo travelers.

  • 5Great value and hassle free

My wife and I had a wonderful day. Our driver/tour guide Mr Vikash Banaress was fantastic. He was very informative, knew all the places to see and very co-operative. We selected the north tour which included Port Louis and the beaches. Pick up at the cruise centre was hassle free. Our only thought regarding the day is that after talking to others we would have preferred the south tour and have seen more of the countryside. Other than that thank you Mr Banaress.

  • 4We would have needed a...

We would have needed a guide for the gardens, not easy to navigate, lots of walking, hot and humid again, but over all the guide was there for us, although he could use a refresher course on how to be a guide as opposed to being a taxi driver! His English needed some work, but his French was fine when I could understand him, over all fine!

About Trou d'Eau Douce

Trou d'Eau Douce is a fishing village on Mauritius's east coast, the usual departure point for boats to Île aux Cerfs and its lagoon.

Trou d'Eau Douce is a small fishing village on the east coast of Mauritius, facing a wide lagoon sheltered by a coral reef. Fishing boats and launches sit along the shore, and a short strip of restaurants and shops looks onto the water. Sugar cane fields stretch inland. The east coast catches the trade winds, so the air is breezier and often cooler than on the west coast.
