The Māori Whakataū is a welcome to New Zealand by the indigenous culture of NZ. The Whakataū embraces key aspects of welcoming manuhiri/visitors to New Zealand and making sure you get an authentic connection to the people of this wonderful land and more specifically here in Wanaka and Queenstown. The scenery is one small part of what makes this country so great, to truely connect with any country you must also connect with the people that make the country what it is. Welcome to the world of WanaHaka® in Wanaka and Queenstown. There is a minimum of 4 required per Whakataū if minimum numbers are not met you will be offered another day or time or complete refund.
In Māori culture we hold two important aspects dear to us. the first being Manaakitanga (Hospitality) and Kaitiakitanga (guardianship of the land) .At WanaHaka® we want you to connect with these 2 important cultural elements. This Pōwhiri can be done in either Queenstown or Wanaka so please do email first as to your preferred location if required. You will be greeted by a Wero/Challenge with a Māori Warrior and Taiaha, from here we move through the key elements of the pōwhiri/welcome where we may start as strangers but by the end we end up as whanaua/family. A truely inspiring cultural experience that combines both the people and the land of Wanaka and Queenstown.

5Best part of our journey!
This was such a special experience to feel the ‘mana’ the power of the Mouri culture. Joe is so open, engaging, loving and welcoming. I got the chance to learn more about New Zealand and left more educated about the Mouri culture who have taken care of this land long before there were ever visitors here. Thank you Joe for welcoming this group of 13 boys, mostly from the US, and being able to build a bridge of connection for all of us.
5Joe is AMAZING
Joe is absolutely incredible. We had such an amazing afternoon and can’t recommend WanaHaka highly enough. This was up there with our top tours in Wanaka. Joe has unbelievable depth of knowledge of the history and footprint of Wanaka and the general region. He made us feel like family. Rippon was stunning, really enjoyed visiting a smaller family owned winery. This is my second tour with Joe and will definitely be back again.
5Outstanding cultural experience
Fantastic experience for our school group from Cairns Australia. Joe did an amazing job explaining Māori culture and customs, through dance, talking and humor that school students could easily relate to. Thank you Joe for making us feel so welcomed to Wanaka, and for this great experience for our students.
5A brilliant experience.
We are a high school group traveling from Australia. Joe took us through a welcome and education session. It was just the best. He was so warm, funny and informative. The kids have been talking about for days afterwards. We all found it so inspiring! Thanks Joe.
5A culturally meaningful experience to welcome a group on their incentive trip
We engaged a Māori Whakatau welcome for our incentive trip and it was outstanding. Joe created an immediate sense of warmth and connection, making everyone feel genuinely welcomed. The highlight was the educational element, which added depth and gave our group a more meaningful understanding of the culture and significance behind the Haka. A truly memorable and impactful experience, highly recommended.
5MUST DO!!!
This was such a life giving experience and a MUST if you are in Wanaka or the southern island of New Zealand. Now I know much more about Wanaka and the culture on New Zealand. I am now a part of the culture and history of Wanaka because of this experience with Joe. Thank you again Joe for the wonderful welcome and experience!
Wānaka is a lakeside town in New Zealand's Southern Alps, set below snowy peaks, a gateway to Mount Aspiring National Park and the ski fields.
Wānaka sits at the southern end of Lake Wānaka in the Otago region of the South Island, with mountains rising on every side. A path follows the lakefront past the lone willow that stands in the water, which has become a symbol of the town. Roys Peak, with its zigzag track, and Mount Iron give views over the lake and the valley. The town has cafés, galleries and a nearby wine region.
Top-ranked sights in Wānaka: Lake Wānaka, Blue Pools Track.
