Rute

  1. The square is named after Jan Matejko, the most beloved Polish painter of the 19th century. He was born here in Kraków in 1838, spent most of his life here, and his studio stood just a short walk from where you're standing now. But what made Matejko extraordinary wasn't just his talent. It was his timing, and his purpose.

  2. Before you pass through the medieval gate ahead and enter the Old Town proper, pause here for a moment. To your right stands the Church of St. Florian — quietly elegant, a little understated compared to some of Kraków's more theatrical landmarks, and yet with a history that punches well above its modest exterior. This church has been welcoming people to the city for the better part of a thousand years.

  3. There he is. It's hard to miss him — King Władysław II Jagiełło, high on horseback, sword raised to the sky, presiding over Matejko Square with the quiet authority of someone who has been standing here for over a century and has absolutely no intention of moving. The Grunwald Monument is one of those rare works of public art that doesn't just decorate a space — it commands it. Stand at its base and tilt your head back. It's even bigger than you think.

  4. You are about to walk through a gate that has been welcoming people into Kraków since the 14th century. That sentence is worth sitting with for a moment. The arch above your head — solid, Gothic, worn smooth in places by centuries of wind and weather — was already old when Columbus sailed to America. Polish kings passed through here. So did merchants, pilgrims, diplomats, and armies. And now, so will you. St. Florian's Gate is not a replica or a reconstruction. It is the real thing, still standing, still in use, as it has been for over seven hundred years.

  5. ake a breath and slow down. You've just stepped through one of the oldest city gates in Europe, and the street stretching out before you — Floriańska Street — has been doing exactly this for seven hundred years: inviting people in, pulling them gently southward, toward the heart of the city. It is roughly four hundred metres long. It will probably take you much longer than you expect to walk it, and that is entirely the point.

  6. ere it is. You've been walking toward this moment since you stepped through the Florian Gate, and now the city has delivered on every promise. The Main Market Square — Rynek Główny — opens around you in all directions: two hundred metres in each direction, enclosed by colourful townhouses, anchored at the centre by the long, elegant arcade of the Cloth Hall. Take a slow turn and look at the whole thing. It is, by almost any measure, one of the great public spaces of Europe.

  7. Before you do anything else, stop and look up. The two towers of St. Mary's Basilica rise above the northeast corner of the Main Market Square like a pair of mismatched siblings — one taller, one shorter, one crowned with an elaborate Gothic spire ringed with gilded stars, the other topped with a more modest dome. They have been there, in one form or another, since the 14th century.

  8. Standing near the southern end of the Cloth Hall, looking slightly away from the crowds as if lost in thought, is Adam Mickiewicz — Poland's greatest poet, rendered in bronze and placed at the very heart of the city he never actually visited. That detail is worth pausing on. The man considered the soul of Polish literature, whose words sustained an entire nation through a century of occupation, never set foot in Kraków. And yet here he stands, at the centre of everything, as though he always belonged here.

  9. Walk through the arcade that runs along the ground floor of the long, elegant building at the centre of the square and you are doing something that merchants, travellers, and Kraków residents have been doing since the Middle Ages. The Sukiennice — the Cloth Hall — is the oldest continuously operating commercial building in Poland. It has been selling things without interruption for the better part of seven hundred years. The goods have changed. The location has not.

    Kører forbi

  10. There is something quietly poignant about the Town Hall Tower. It stands alone on the western side of the square — 70 metres tall, solid, confident, beautifully proportioned — and yet it is, in a sense, a ghost. The great Town Hall it once belonged to was demolished in 1820, and the tower is all that survived. It has been standing here on its own for over two hundred years, and it has made an exceptionally dignified peace with its solitude.

    Kører forbi

  11. In the southeast corner of the Main Market Square, almost swallowed by the bustle around it, sits a church so small it looks as though the square simply forgot to make room for it. The Church of St. Adalbert is barely visible between the café tables, and yet it is almost certainly the oldest building on the square, and quite possibly the oldest church in Kraków. This small, round-shouldered building has been standing here since before the square itself existed.

    Kører forbi

  12. f Floriańska Street was the northern half of your journey into the heart of Kraków, then Grodzka Street is the southern half — the continuation of the Royal Road that carries you onward from the Main Market Square toward the castle on the hill. It is a street that rewards slow walking, frequent pausing, and the willingness to look up, look sideways, and occasionally duck into a courtyard to see what's hidden behind an unassuming doorway.

About Krakow

Top-ranked sights in Krakow: Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, Rynek Glowny (Main Market Square), Wieliczka Salt Mine (Kopalnia Soli).
