Rute
Embark on an unforgettable half-day adventure to Pacaya, one of Guatemala’s most active volcanoes. After a scenic one-hour drive from Antigua, begin a guided hike through lush forests and volcanic terrain. The trail offers striking views and leads to a plateau with dried lava fields and steaming vents—clear signs of ongoing volcanic activity. For safety reasons, visitors can’t approach the crater, but the volcanic heat is felt underfoot. On select departures, and when conditions allow, you may even cook pizza over hot volcanic rocks (a fun and unique treat). At the summit, take in panoramic views of nearby volcanoes and the vast Guatemalan landscape before descending back to the base. This experience blends natural beauty, light adventure, and a rare geological encounter, perfect for curious travelers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

Was a great tour! The hike is a little more difficult than expected, but very fun. The first half is very strenuous, going straight uphill, but it was worth it for the marshmallows in the geothermal vents. Roberto and Omar were great guides.
5Spectacular Volcano Views and a Great Guided Tour
We really enjoyed the Pacaya Volcano tour with our guide, Walter. We were picked up on time in Antigua at 6 a.m., and after a coffee break along the way, we switched to another bus. The journey to and from the volcano was enjoyable, making the overall experience pleasant from start to finish. As announced beforehand, an entrance fee of 100 GTQ per person was payable at the national park entrance. Walter took great care of the group throughout the hike and made sure everyone was doing well. The group was quite diverse in terms of fitness levels, and we were among the more active participants. Some hikers even needed horses to help them along the way. Based on our experience, I would rate the hike as easy to moderate in difficulty, although this may depend on your fitness level. The highlight was undoubtedly the spectacular views from the top. We could even see ash clouds rising from Fuego Volcano in the distance, which made the experience even more memorable. All in all, we had a fantastic time and can highly recommend this tour!
5Incredible experience....
Incredible experience. Our tour guide Ervin was awesome and super knowledgeable. We traveled with 2 kids age 10 and 12 and they made it all the way up without the use of a horse. Wouldn’t miss this.
4Nice
Come for the hike, not the volcano. It’s unusual to see the lychen-encrusted lava fields and have a meted marshmallow, but it is not a transcendental experience. The view at the top is nice though. The trail has some steep sections for which a moderate condition is required. Total length is 5.1 km with 380m elevation gain.
5Best tour and guide!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience with our tour guide Roberto! Our volcano hike was definitely challenging and pushed us outside of our comfort zones, but having such a kind, patient, and encouraging guide made all the difference. Our guide Roberto was incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and attentive throughout the entire hike. They made sure we were doing okay, encouraged us when things got difficult, and never made us feel rushed or pressured. Their positive attitude and kindness helped us keep going, even during the toughest parts of the climb. We truly appreciated all the little things they did along the way to make the experience special. They shared their knowledge of the area, helped us feel safe and comfortable, and made what could have been an overwhelming hike into an incredible memory that we will always cherish. Thank you so much Roberto for your hard work, patience, encouragement, and for helping us accomplish something we weren’t sure we could do! We are so grateful for the experience and would absolutely recommend this tour and guide to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in Guatemala. ❤️🌋🇬🇹

About Antigua
Antigua Guatemala is a colonial city of cobbled streets, ruined churches and pastel façades, ringed by three volcanoes in the Guatemalan highlands.
Antigua was the capital of Spanish Guatemala until earthquakes in 1773 led to the move of the government to the present capital. The grid of cobbled streets and low colonial houses survived, together with the ruins of grand churches and convents, and the town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The yellow Santa Catalina Arch, with its clock tower, frames Volcán de Agua at the end of a street.
Top-ranked sights in Antigua: Antigua Central Park (Parque Central), Cerro de la Cruz (Hill of the Cross), La Merced Church (Iglesia de la Merced).
