The legend of El Dorado says that the Muisca ritual consisted of the chief of the tribe immersing himself in the lake covered with gold dust accompanied by his followers who threw jewelry and other gold objects into the water. The Spanish conquistadors, as well as many other people from all over the world, would go to the lake to search for treasure in this golden lake, sacred to the Muisca people.
After pick-up at your hotel in Bogota, head north to this circular mountain lake, about an hour's drive from the city.
When you arrive, your expert guide will show you around and tell you about the rich history of the lake, which was believed to hide a treasure trove of gold from the indigenous Muisca tribe. Bogotá, Colombia's capital, sits high in the Andes at around 2,600 metres, with a colonial old quarter, a famed gold museum and a hilltop church.
La Candelaria, the old quarter, lies at the foot of the eastern hills, with streets of colonial houses, galleries and murals around Plaza de Bolívar and its cathedral. The Gold Museum holds thousands of pre-Hispanic gold objects, and the Botero Museum shows the plump figures of Fernando Botero, who gave the city his collection. Above town, a funicular and cable car rise to Monserrate, a white church at over 3,100 metres.
Top-ranked sights in Bogotá: Plaza de Bolivar, Botero Museum (Museo Botero), Gold Museum (Museo del Oro).
