1. Yet another fascinating and slightly spooky fort in Jaisalmer, Khaba Fort, was once inhabited by the Paliwal Brahmins. It was then suddenly deserted for mysterious reasons. The fort still has the ruins of the homes of some 80 families that used to live here more than 200 years ago.

About Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer is a golden sandstone fort town in the Thar Desert of Rajasthan, with a living hilltop citadel, carved havelis and camel treks to the dunes.

Jaisalmer rises from the sands of the Thar Desert near India's western border, and the honey-coloured stone of its buildings has earned it the name Golden City. Its fort, founded in 1156 by the Bhati ruler Jaisal, stands on a hill above the town, with houses, shops, temples and guesthouses still inside the walls. It is one of the few forts in India where people still live, and it belongs to the Hill Forts of Rajasthan World Heritage listing.
