Zhangjiajie, in Hunan, is the gateway to Wulingyuan, a UNESCO-listed forest of thousands of sandstone pillars rising from deep, misty gorges.
Zhangjiajie is a city in north-west Hunan, and its name is also given to the national forest park at its heart, the first national forest park in China. The park belongs to the Wulingyuan scenic area, listed by UNESCO in 1992, where more than three thousand narrow sandstone pillars stand among green forest, some rising 200 metres or more. One tall pillar was renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain after the film.
