City lights can make stargazing difficult; this guided night tour takes you to Akaroa Heritage Park for views of the Banks Peninsula night sky in a shared group of up to 10 travelers. Start with naked-eye viewing, binoculars, and questions for your guide before using two telescopes: a 10-inch Dobsonian for visual observations and a ZWO Seestar S50 smart telescope for live astrophotography. Receive digital photos of nebulae and deep-sky objects instantly, plus a personalized photo under the night sky sent the next day. Coffee or tea and cozy blankets are provided as you look for planets, the Milky Way, nebulae, and distant galaxies. On a clear night, the range of objects to find is virtually unlimited, and no prior astronomy knowledge is required.
Experience some stellar sights of our Banks Peninsula night sky in this stargazing group tour. Your immersion into the darkness starts as you first look up with your naked eyes. You will then get to see deeper into space thanks to our binoculars and telescope. Follow our Guide as he takes you on a journey of discoveries. Ask him any questions you might have about our night sky! No prior astronomy knowledge is required. On a clear night, it is essentially impossible to run out of objects to look for in the night sky, making stargazing an infinite source of inspiration and amazement.

5Luca is (one of) the (billions of) Stars
This experience is spectacular. More than five stars - billions!! Location is perfect; Luca even more so. He imparts his extensive knowledge and thoughts in a wonderfully warm way. Luca is a great communicator and lovely storyteller. I and my eight-year-old mokopuna really enjoyed our tour among the stars.
5Magical night under the stars
I went with my friends and we had a fantastic time! We visited during the new moon, so we were treated to an incredibly clear night sky, making the whole experience even more magical. Luca is such a friendly host, and his passion and knowledge really shone through. The experience was engaging, informative, and easy to follow, even for those of us with very little prior knowledge of astronomy. I'd highly recommend this experience to anyone looking for a memorable evening under New Zealand's beautiful night sky!
5Akaroa Highlight
The highlight of our time in Akaroa! Luca shared his knowledge in such an accessible and entertaining way. Our teenagers enjoyed it as much as we did and we all learnt so much. Highly recommend!
5Highly recommended!
A fantastic experience! Luca is super knowledgeable, we had a great time learning about stars and the solar system. Thanks again!
5Memorable stargazing night
Staff was super knowledgeable, and explained things well for our first stargazing experience. We absolutely loved it, especially looking through the telescope and seeing pictures afterwards of what we talked about. They made the experience very comfortable with blankets, hot drinks and comfy chairs. The rest of our honeymoon, my husband and I kept finding stars that we learned about during this experience.
3The Night Sky
Unfortunately we experienced a cloudy night so were unable to see a great deal. A partial refund was offered, as yet unsure how much. Our host was friendly and informative. We felt the price was excessive considering what we got out of the night. Be careful booking through trip advisor as the default currency advertised is in $US which makes it seem cheaper till final payment.
Akaroa is a small harbour town on Banks Peninsula, founded by French settlers, with French street names, wooden cottages and Hector's dolphins in the bay.
Akaroa lies inside a drowned volcanic crater on Banks Peninsula, south-east of Christchurch, and was settled by French colonists in 1840, soon after Britain had claimed the island. Streets carry French names, such as Rue Lavaud and Rue Jolie, and wooden cottages with verandas line the waterfront. The Akaroa Museum tells the story of Māori, whalers and the French settlers.
Top-ranked sights in Akaroa: Akaroa Lighthouse, The Giants House.
