Baños de Agua Santa lies at about 1,800 metres, where the Andes drop towards the Amazon basin, on the Pastaza River in Tungurahua province. The town grew around its thermal baths, fed by volcanic springs, and around the Basilica of the Virgin of the Holy Water, a pilgrimage church of dark stone.
