  2. Climbing the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica is one of those Roman experiences that stays with you long after you’ve come back down to ground level. It’s not just a viewpoint — it’s a journey through the architecture, history, and sheer ambition of Michelangelo’s masterpiece. You begin inside the basilica, already surrounded by its vast marble interior, before heading toward the entrance for the dome ascent. At the top, Rome opens up beneath you — terracotta rooftops, the sweep of St. Peter’s Square, and the city stretching toward the hills. It’s the highest viewpoint in the Vatican and one of the most iconic panoramas in the city. Many visitors say it’s the highlight of their entire Vatican visit.

About Vatican City

Vatican City is a tiny independent state inside Rome, home of St Peter's Basilica, the Vatican Museums and Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel.

Vatican City is an independent state of less than half a square kilometre, enclosed by walls inside Rome on the west bank of the Tiber, and the smallest country in the world. It is the seat of the Catholic Church and the home of the pope. St Peter's Square, framed by Bernini's curving colonnades, leads to St Peter's Basilica, built over the traditional tomb of the apostle Peter, with Michelangelo's dome rising above and his Pietà inside.
