The souks specialise: perfumes, gold, leather and the red felt caps called chechia each have their own alleys. The medina is entered through Bab el Bhar, the French Gate, from the broad Avenue Habib Bourguiba, which has French colonial buildings and cafés and runs to the cathedral of St Vincent de Paul.
