Wat Rong Khun, perhaps better known to foreigners as the White Temple, is a privately owned art exhibit in the style of a Buddhist temple in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. It is owned by Chalermchai Kositpipat, who designed, constructed, and opened it to visitors in 1997
The Wat Phra Kaew is a Royal Temple in Chiang Rai and one of the oldest in the city. Although the exact year the Wat was founded is not known, it goes back at least to the end of the 14th century. The Wat Phra Kaew is an important temple in Thai history, as it was here where the Emerald Buddha was discovered in the year 1434 after lightning struck the chedi where it was kept. Chiang Rai, in northern Thailand, is a relaxed city known for a white temple of glass and plaster and as the base for the Golden Triangle.
Chiang Rai was founded in 1262 by King Mengrai, who later moved his capital to Chiang Mai, and it still feels more like a market town than a city. The golden clock tower at the central roundabout, the night bazaar and the Kok River set the tone. Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple, an elaborate modern temple of white plaster and mirrored glass by the artist Chalermchai Kositpipat, lies just south of the city.
Top-ranked sights in Chiang Rai: White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), Wat Rong Seur Ten (Blue Temple), Hall of Opium Museum.
