More than a place of historical learning, it stands as a symbol of national pride and a tribute to the soldiers who sacrificed for the country’s independence. The Dien Bien Phu Martyrs' Cemetery is a solemn memorial honoring the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the resistance against French colonialism. Established in 1958 in the center of Dien Bien Phu city, it holds over 6,000 graves, including many soldiers from diverse ethnic groups. As both a resting place and a site of remembrance, the cemetery allows visitors to pay tribute to those who fought for the nation’s independence and freedom, reflecting the patriotic spirit and resilience of the Vietnamese people
A1 Hill, also known as C1 Hill, is one of Dien Bien Phu’s most important historical sites, where fierce battles unfolded during the fight against French colonialism. Its strategic position made it a key Viet Minh stronghold, and the victory here in May 1954 marked a major turning point in the campaign. Today, A1 Hill serves as both a memorial and a popular tourist site, offering visitors a chance to learn about its history, honor fallen soldiers, and appreciate the surrounding landscape. We then continue to the De Castries Bunker, the former command center of French General Henri de Castries during the Indochina War and another key landmark of the battlefield
12:00 – Travel into the mountains to the lesser-known Muong Phang village, home of the Black Thai ethnic community and an important base during the battle. Enjoy a warm, home-cooked Black Thai family lunch at a local homestay, with time to relax and take in the peaceful surroundings. 12:30 – Traditional Black Thai lunch.
After resting and finishing lunch, we walk to Ban Kha Village, an important historical site where the Viet Minh established their command center during the Dien Bien Phu Campaign. Located on a high hill, it offered a strategic vantage point for directing military operations and making key decisions that led to the victory in May 1954. Today, Ban Kha remains a meaningful destination for visitors to learn about the campaign’s history and the achievements of the Vietnamese army
Pha Khoang Lake is a scenic spot in Dien Bien, known for its peaceful atmosphere and natural beauty. About Dien Bien Phu
Dien Bien Phu is a town in a wide mountain valley in north-west Vietnam near the Laos border, known for the 1954 battle and rice fields.
Dien Bien Phu lies in the Muong Thanh valley, a broad rice-growing plain among the mountains of north-west Vietnam, not far from the border with Laos. In 1954 the valley was the site of the decisive battle between the Viet Minh and French forces, which ended in a French defeat and led to the Geneva Accords. The town's Victory Museum tells the story.
