Zambia shares Victoria Falls with Zimbabwe, where the Zambezi drops into a narrow gorge in a cloud of spray that local people call the smoke that thunders. Livingstone, the nearby town, is named after the explorer David Livingstone and keeps colonial-era buildings, a museum and views from the old Victoria Falls Bridge. Lusaka, the capital, spreads across a central plateau with markets and craft stalls.

Below the falls, the Zambezi runs through the Batoka Gorge, a rafting river, and the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park beside the falls has giraffes and rhinos. South Luangwa National Park, in the east, is known for walking safaris and leopards, Lower Zambezi has elephants along the river banks, and Kafue is huge and wild.

Nshima, a stiff maize porridge, is eaten daily with relishes of greens, grilled bream or kapenta, tiny dried lake fish. The dry months from May to October suit game viewing, and Victoria Falls is fullest from March to May after the rains.
