5Great time despite weather
Had an excellent Experience despite the curiously bad weather October 10 had 20+ miles per hour winds and rain unseasonably cooler. Four stops by a boat 30 minute boat ride to the vanilla tour interesting good enjoyed it better than I thought. I would then 30 minutes to the rum tasting interesting but two little itty-bitty tastings. Then boat ride to Coral Gardens drift snorkel was really good despite rain and overcast then the pearl farm no hard sell but actually interesting. Nice bathroom there, then to the private motu -which was by far the best experience the BBQ food was really excellent. have to eat with your hands, but it was great to see the sharks and tons of little fish at your feet. The guide. Tarzan was truly amazing and hilarious and engaging and seems like he genuinely loves his job. The other guide for other group was French 10 people per boat- was actually very helpful and friendly also then a 30 minute crushing boat ride back to our cruise ship. I would not recommend this for people like my elderly mother who has mobility or neck issues maybe if it was a perfect weather day.
5Real bang for your buck and with excellent guides
The day trip was amazing, truly blew our expectations out of the park. We stopped at a rum distillery, vanilla farm, pearl farm, snorkeling and a private island for an amazing island buffet. The food was amazing, and our guide Terehoa (not sure how to spell it 😂) went above and beyond, speaking both French and English for us and teaching us about climbing and shucking coconuts. I’d definitely reccomend to everyone
5Do not hesitate book this...
Do not hesitate book this tour! We had the best day ever and did not want our tour to end. We were very fortunate to have Tarzan. He was a pleasure to be with and made it so much fun! Thanks Tarzan
5Sharks, Lagoon Lunch, Pearls, Vanilla, & snorkeling - so much amazing things in one high energy tour!
We had an amazing time of this tour and enjoyed some of the most unique experiences in our travels. Vanilla farm, pearl farm, coral garden snorkeling, freshly prepared local cuisine served literally at a table in the lagoon with fish swimming all around you, coconut ceremony, and topped off with black tipped shark swimming/snorkeling. The boat captains had amazing energy despite some clouds and lots of waves which made the boat ride slightly chilly. Highly recommend this full day adventure!!
5Authentic, fun and beautiful... but know what to expect
Our ARE Tours Raiatea Authentic Polynesian Experience started off pretty unimpressively, but ended up being one of those excursions that makes you realize how fortunate you are to be visiting French Polynesia. The biggest problem was the meeting point. We had contacted ARE Tours in advance and were specifically told that a guide in a red-and-white local shirt would be waiting near the cruise ship tourist office/tender port with an ARE TOURS sign. When we arrived, no representative was there, while seemingly every other tour company had people clearly waiting for their guests. It was confusing and stressful and definitely needs improvement. The rep said they had misplaced the sign and we had to find them by the boats. The Good thing is operators knew ARE. Once we finally got connected with ARE Tours, though, the day got MUCH better. WE HAD to wait for stragglers and didn't leave port until 8:40am...we had made such an effort to get early tender that this was disappointing. There are four main stops: 1. Vanilla farm — We visited a vanilla farm for a demonstration and had an opportunity to purchase vanilla and sample coffee and tea. Interesting introduction to one of the products French Polynesia is famous for. Toilet on site...Authentic, fun and beautiful — but know what to expect 2. Coral garden/snorkeling — About a 20-minute boat ride to a beautiful, very calm cove. Be aware that the snorkeling equipment ARE provides is very basic—mask/snorkel, but no fins or safety vests. Instructions were also minimal. They basically told us we'd have approximately 20 minutes and that they would blow a conch shell when it was time to return to the boat. The boats pull into very shallow water, which makes getting on and off fairly easy. I would definitely recommend water shoes, and if you're particular about snorkeling equipment, bring your own. One older couple had apparently requested pool noodles in advance, but they weren't available. Fortunately, one of the ARE boats had a boogie board they were able to use, which was a nice solution. Our day was partly cloudy and the water felt a little chilly. Bring more than one towel and possibly a lightweight zip-up hoodie or cover-up. Once you're wet, the fast boat ride can get surprisingly cool. 3. Pearl farm — This involved a longer boat ride and was excellent. In fact, this was one of the best pearl demonstrations I've seen. It was genuinely informative rather than simply feeling like a shopping stop. Pearls were available for purchase, the prices seemed reasonable, and there was a discount for paying cash. We found that U.S. dollars and credit cards were widely accepted. 4. Private-island lunch — This was the highlight. We arrived around 1 PM at an island that, as we understood it, the owner rents for the experience. It was absolutely beautiful. Lunch was terrific—mahi-mahi, tuna, chicken, rice, vegetables, fruit and water—served in a gorgeous tropical setting. Then came the entertainment. The nine boat drivers put on two shows, and they were hilarious, energetic and one of the highlights of the entire excursion. They changed into rather skimpy traditional-style outfits, played music, sang and completely entertained the group. Some spoke more English than others, but it really didn't matter. The whole thing was a little edgy, a lot of fun, incredibly beautiful and refreshingly unpolished. It didn't feel like a sanitized cruise-ship excursion, and that was part of its charm. ARE Tours could absolutely improve the organization at the beginning and provide better snorkeling equipment and instructions. But once the day got going, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Go prepared: water shoes, extra towel, light hoodie/cover-up, sunscreen and your own snorkel gear if that's important to you. Then relax and enjoy it. Despite the rocky start, this turned into a memorable day in Raiatea—and an experience that reminds you just how lucky you are to visit this beautiful part of the world.
5Must do experience
This is one experience not to be missed. From start to finish we all had a fantastic time . Food and entertainment as well as lovely standing or swim with fish in the coral garden
