Admired by more than 200,000 visitors a year, this major tourist attraction was originally built in 990 AD as the “Imperial Place of Prayer”. Today, St. Stephen’s Church contains 9 outstanding blue stained glass windows by the Jewish-Russian artist Marc Chagall. Already 89 years old, Chagall started designing his message of hope for this beautiful little church and finished the final window shortly before his death at the age of 97. Get to know the different scenes from the Old Testament like Adam and Eve in Paradise and Jacob's dream then step into the small late Gothic cloister, one of the prettiest along the Middle Rhine.
From St. Stephen's, we will stroll downhill to St. Martin's cathedral, which for over a thousand years has towered over the ancient city of Mainz. Here kings have been crowned and the Protestant Reformation was kindled. Discover its many unique features, hear about its dramatic history and meet headless St. Alban in the cloisters.

About Mainz
Mainz is a Rhine city and the home town of Gutenberg, with a thousand-year-old red sandstone cathedral, Chagall's blue windows and Rheinhessen wine.
Mainz stands on the west bank of the Rhine where the Main river joins it, the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. St Martin's Cathedral, begun around 975, rises in red sandstone above the old town's market square. Johannes Gutenberg was born here, and the Gutenberg Museum displays original Bibles from his press, which launched printing with movable type in Europe around 1450.
