Tunis, the capital, has a UNESCO-listed medina of covered souks and the Zitouna Mosque, and the Bardo Museum holds a vast collection of Roman mosaics. Nearby, Sidi Bou Said is a blue-and-white village on a cliff, and the ruins of Carthage lie by the sea.
Hammamet and Sousse have beaches, medinas and sea forts, and Monastir has the Ribat, a coastal fortress from the eighth century. Djerba is an island of white houses, pottery and a historic synagogue, linked by causeway to the mainland. In the south, Gabès is an oasis by the sea, and Tozeur and Douz are palm-oasis towns at the edge of the Sahara, with Chott el Djerid, a vast salt lake, between them.
Brik, a crisp pastry with egg, harissa chilli paste, couscous and grilled fish are staples, with olive oil on everything and dates from the southern oases. Mint tea with pine nuts finishes a meal. The coast is warm and sunny from May to October, and desert nights are cold in winter.
