Cape Verde is a volcanic archipelago in the Atlantic west of Senegal, where desert dunes, a great volcano and Creole music share ten islands.

Cape Verde's islands range from flat, sandy Sal and Boa Vista in the east to steep, green mountains in the west. Santa Maria, on Sal, has a long beach and a pier where fishermen land their catch. Praia, the capital on Santiago, spreads over a plateau, and Cidade Velha nearby, the first European colonial town in the tropics, is listed by UNESCO.

Mindelo, on São Vicente, is the cultural capital, a port of colonial façades and live music that was home to the singer Cesária Évora and holds a famous carnival before Lent. On Boa Vista, Sal Rei and Rabil lie near wide dunes and pale beaches where loggerhead turtles nest in summer. Fogo is a single volcano rising from the sea, with São Filipe on its flank, and Brava, reached by boat from Fogo, is a small island whose hilltop town, Nova Sintra, is known for its flowers.

Cachupa, a slow-cooked stew of maize, beans and fish or pork, is the national dish, and grogue, a spirit made from sugar cane, is poured at celebrations. Morna and coladeira music drifts from bars after dark. The climate is dry and sunny, with Atlantic trade winds keeping the heat in check, and the few showers fall between August and October.
