Brunei is split in two by a strip of Malaysian territory and lies on Borneo's north coast, with rainforest behind a shoreline of sand and mangroves. Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital, is a calm riverside city whose centre is the Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, its golden dome reflected in a lagoon. Nearby, Kampong Ayer stands on stilts over the Brunei River, one of the largest water villages in the world.
The Royal Regalia Museum displays ceremonial objects and gifts, and the Jame' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque is crowned with golden domes. West of the capital the coast road passes Jerudong and long, quiet beaches on the South China Sea. In the east, Ulu Temburong National Park, reached by boat along the river, has a canopy walkway above the treetops.
Ambuyat, a sticky starch made from sago and eaten by twirling it round a bamboo fork into sharp dips, is the national dish, and satay, noodles and grilled fish fill the night market stalls. The climate is hot, humid and green all year, with rain in every month.
