Legends & Miracles The Mokattam Mountain Miracle: Tradition holds that in the 10th century, Pope Abraham prayed here for three days before the Virgin Mary appeared in a vision, giving him the power to move the Mokattam Mountain through faith. The "Coptic Mona Lisa": Among its 110 holy icons is the famous 8th-century "Coptic Mona Lisa," which depicts the Virgin Mary with eyes that seem to follow you from any angle. Holy Family Shelter: A local legend suggests the church was built on a site where the Holy Family (Jesus, Mary, and Joseph) hid during their flight into Egypt.
Unlike ordinary churches that are built with bricks and concrete, a cave church is carved directly into a mountain or inside a natural cave. This makes it a unique place where nature and faith come together. One famous example is the Saint Simon the Tanner Monastery. This church is carved inside the Mokattam Mountain and can hold thousands of people. When you enter a cave church, you immediately feel a sense of peace and wonder. The natural rock walls, the quiet atmosphere, and the beautiful carvings create a very special spiritual feeling. These churches were often built centuries ago by people who wanted a safe and sacred place to practice their faith. Carving a church from solid rock required patience, strength, and great dedication. Today, cave churches are not only places of worship but also important historical . They remind us that faith, creativity, and determination can transform even a simple cave into a magnificent place of inspiration and community. Thank you.

About Cairo
Cairo is Egypt's sprawling capital on the Nile, where the Pyramids of Giza meet medieval mosques, busy bazaars and the treasures of the pharaohs.
On the western edge of the city, the Pyramids of Giza and the Great Sphinx rise from the desert plateau, with the step pyramid of Saqqara and the ruins of Memphis further south. Cairo's great museums, the Egyptian Museum on Tahrir Square and the vast Grand Egyptian Museum beside the plateau, hold artefacts spanning thousands of years.
Top-ranked sights in Cairo: Egyptian Museum (Museum of Egyptian Antiquities), Saqqara (Sakkara), Khan El-Khalili.
