Rwanda is a small, hilly country in the heart of Africa, with misty volcanoes, mountain gorillas, a lake shore and green terraced farms.

Called the land of a thousand hills, Rwanda is covered in terraces of tea, coffee and banana trees. Kigali, the capital, spreads across several ridges and is known for its cleanliness and cafés; the Kigali Genocide Memorial records the genocide against the Tutsi in 1994. Butare, also called Huye, is the university town of the south, home of the National Museum of Rwanda.

In the north-west, Ruhengeri, now often Musanze, lies beneath the Virunga volcanoes, the home of Volcanoes National Park and its mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Gisenyi and Kibuye are lakeside towns on Lake Kivu, with beaches and island boat trips. Nyungwe Forest, in the south-west, has chimpanzees and a canopy walkway, and Akagera, in the east, is savanna with lions, giraffes and hippos.

Brochettes of grilled goat or beef are the classic meal, with beans, plantain and potatoes, and Rwandan coffee and tea are grown on the slopes. Intore dance is a drum-driven tradition. The main dry season runs from June to September, with a shorter dry spell in December and January.
