Honduras unites Maya ruins, Caribbean islands and cloud-forest mountains, from the carved stelae of Copán to the reefs off Roatán.

Copán, near the Guatemalan border, was a Maya city famed for its sculpture: stelae carved with the portraits of kings and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, which carries the longest known Maya text. Tegucigalpa, the capital, is a hillside city of colonial churches and plazas in a mountain valley, and San Pedro Sula, the commercial hub, lies in the hot Sula Valley in the north.
On the Caribbean coast, La Ceiba is the gateway to Pico Bonito National Park and the rapids of the Cangrejal River, and Garifuna villages along the coast keep their drumming and cooking. Offshore, Roatán, the largest of the Bay Islands, sits on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, with West Bay beach and diving close to the shore. Lake Yojoa is a large mountain lake rich in bird life.
Baleadas, folded flour tortillas filled with refried beans, cream and cheese, are eaten at any hour, and sopa de caracol, conch soup with coconut milk, is a speciality of the coast. Honduran coffee is grown in the western highlands. The north coast is wet from October to January, and the dry months from February to May suit the islands best.
