Canglang Pavilion is the oldest classical garden in Suzhou. Built in the 11th century, this UNESCO-listed garden blends poetic charm with natural simplicity. Unlike typical Suzhou gardens, it features an open design with winding corridors, waterside views, and rugged rockeries. Visitors can explore the historic Ming-era pavilion, a unique water-integrated layout, scholar’s legacy stone inscriptions, dense bamboo groves and ancient trees, serene curved bridges and hidden pathways. Suzhou, an old canal city west of Shanghai, is known for its classical gardens, whitewashed houses and stone bridges over narrow canals.
Suzhou has been a centre of wealth and culture for more than two thousand years, and its scholars and wealthy families built gardens as private retreats. Nine of them are inscribed by UNESCO, among them the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden and the Master of the Nets Garden, with rockeries, ponds, pavilions and zigzag corridors arranged to make small spaces seem large.
Top-ranked sights in Suzhou: Pingjiang Road (Pingjiang Lu), Zhouzhuang Water Town, Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuo Zheng Yuan).
